Virtual Closer vs Close

Of everything on this page, Close is the most similar to us in shape: built-in calling, two-way SMS, and multi-step sequences in one tool rather than three. It's a good product and inside-sales teams like it for good reasons. The divergence is underneath, in what the data model is allowed to represent.

The honest one-line version

Close deliberately keeps its data model simple, and says so. That is a real product decision with real benefits. It is also precisely the decision that means an insurance agency's commission structure ends up somewhere else.

Where each one stops

CapabilityVirtual CloserClose
Built-in calling and power dialer Conference-based single or multi-line dialing, with an abandonment brake Power and predictive dialers, no separate telephony setup
Two-way SMS Yes, and it's the core of the product Built in, not an add-on
Multi-step sequences AI conversation rather than a fixed sequence Multi-step with conditional logic
Autonomous AI that holds the conversation Opens, qualifies, objection-handles and books unaided AI call assistant, notetaker and summaries
Data model flexibility Insurance model is built in, not configured Custom objects attach to lead records; not fully independent
Several product lines per household A row per line, each with its own disposition, owner and clock Not expressible without independent objects
Insurance objects (carrier, policy, age band) First-class Not modelled
Commission, override spread, chargebacks Built in Not modelled
Carrier commission reconciliation Upload a carrier statement; lines matched to policies and set against projected comp No concept of a commission statement
Persistency By book, line of business and producer Not modelled
SMS geographic coverage US-focused, carrier account is yours US, Canada, GB and Australia
Best fit Insurance agencies of any size Inside sales teams, roughly 5–50 reps

Close's pricing is deliberately absent here. It changes, and a comparison that quotes a competitor's price wrongly is worse than one that doesn't quote it at all. Ours is published in full, with no "request a quote" step — see what Virtual Closer costs.

1 · Credit where it's due: the phone half is genuinely close

Most comparisons on this site are between a specialist and a generalist. This one isn't, quite. Close put calling and SMS inside the CRM instead of bolting them on, which is the same conviction we have — that a sales tool which makes you leave it to make contact isn't finished.

So if your evaluation is purely "can my team call and text from one screen, with sequences and good reporting," Close does that well and you should weigh it seriously.

2 · The constraint that matters is in the objects

Close supports custom objects on its higher plans, with one documented condition: they attach to lead records rather than existing as fully independent entities, and complex many-to-many relationships are out of scope. Close describes this as prioritising simplicity over infinite flexibility, and that's a defensible engineering position.

It is also, exactly, the shape insurance breaks. A household relates to several products; each product relates to a carrier; each carrier relates to comp rates that vary by product and age band; each rate relates to a rank level; each producer sits at a rank level per line of business. That is a many-to-many graph, not a lead with extra fields attached.

3 · What that means in practice

It means the parts of the job Close covers, it covers well, and the parts it doesn't move somewhere else — usually a spreadsheet, sometimes an agency management system, always a person keeping them aligned.

Virtual Closer holds it all against one record: the AI books the appointment, the appointment lands on that product's pipeline card, the sale stamps the comp rate that applied that day, the payout calendar is generated from the carrier's terms, the chargeback books itself if the policy lapses early, and persistency reports on the book that results.

When you should choose Close instead

  • You're an inside sales team that isn't insurance-specific. That's who Close is built for and it shows.
  • You want simplicity and you mean it. Close's constrained data model is a feature — fewer things to configure, fewer ways to get it wrong. If comp lives happily in a spreadsheet, this is a fair trade.
  • You need predictive dialing at volume for a generic outbound motion.
  • You sell in Canada, GB or Australia and need SMS there. Their coverage spans those markets.
  • You don't need an AI to hold the conversation. If your reps do the talking and just need great sequencing around it, Close is a leaner answer than we are.

Questions

Is Close a good CRM for insurance agents?

Close is a strong inside-sales CRM with built-in calling, two-way SMS and multi-step sequences, and insurance agents do use it. It is not insurance-specific: there are no native objects for carriers, policies, age bands, commission levels or persistency, and its custom objects attach to lead records rather than being fully independent, so a household with several products across several carriers cannot be modelled directly.

How is Virtual Closer different from Close?

The phone and messaging layers are comparable in intent. The difference is the data model and the AI. Virtual Closer models a product line per thing you sell, each with its own openers, prompts and cadences, several product rows per household, rank levels with per-carrier and per-product commission by age band, override spread, payout schedules with chargebacks, and persistency — and its AI holds the conversation autonomously rather than running a fixed sequence.

Does Close track insurance commissions?

Not as a modelled concept. Close reports on opportunity values and activity. Commission by carrier, product and age band, rank-level comp, override spread, advance versus as-earned schedules and chargebacks on lapse are outside its data model.

Which should a small agency pick?

If the team is small, the products are few and comp is simple, Close is a lean and capable choice. If you write several lines, care about what each sale actually pays after chargebacks, or want the first touch to happen without a human awake, the specialised model saves work that would otherwise land on a person.
