Local numbers (DIDs) and why a pool beats a single number
Dialing a lead from a number with their own area code gets answered more often. A pool of local numbers, with the same number sticking to the same lead, is how you get that without looking like spam.
Who this is for
Anyone dialing at volume — including solo agents. This is not an enterprise-only technique; plenty of individual agents run 50 or more local numbers.
Why local presence
People answer numbers that look local far more often than numbers that don't. If you're calling a lead in Ohio from a Florida number, you're paying for a worse answer rate on every dial. A pool of local numbers lets the system pick one whose area code matches the lead you're about to call.
Sticky numbers
Once a lead has seen a number from you, they should keep seeing that same number. The system holds a number to a lead rather than picking a fresh one each time. This matters for two reasons: the lead recognises you on a callback, and rotating numbers through the same person is exactly the pattern carriers score as spam.
When there's no local match
If you have no number in the lead's area code, the system falls back to another number rather than not calling. That's the right behaviour — a call from the wrong area code beats no call — but a fallback that fires constantly means your coverage doesn't match where your leads are, and it's worth buying into the gap.
Reputation and spam labelling
Numbers accumulate reputation. Blasting a brand-new number at high volume is the fastest way to get it labelled 'Spam Likely', at which point it's close to worthless. Ramp new numbers up gradually, spread volume across the pool rather than hammering one number, and retire numbers that pick up a label rather than trying to rehabilitate them.
How this differs by setup
Solo agent You run everything yourself.
Captive agency The agency owns the numbers, the A2P brand and the bill.
Independent agent You're in an agency but buy your own number and register your own EIN.
How to check it worked
- Make a test call to a phone in a state you have coverage for and confirm the caller ID matches that area code.
- Call the same lead twice and confirm the caller ID doesn't change between attempts.
- Check number health for anything flagged.
Common mistakes
- Buying numbers evenly across the country instead of where your leads actually are.
- Running a brand-new number at full volume on day one and getting it labelled.
- Letting the same lead see different numbers on different attempts.
