What is an orphan policy?

An orphan policy is an in-force policy whose writing agent is no longer with the agency or the business, leaving the client with coverage and no servicing agent. The premium continues; the relationship does not.

Orphan books are one of the most underused assets in an agency. These are clients who already bought, already trust the product, and currently have nobody calling them — which makes them a materially better cross-sell audience than any lead you can buy.

They also lapse more than serviced policies, for the obvious reason that nobody notices when their payment fails. Assigning orphans to a producer is usually a retention decision before it is a sales one.
